About Me:
pro musician
nyc
time to quit.
i write, produce, play drums professionally.
i started smoking when i was 16. started playing drums when i was 3. deciding to be a professional musician; a drummer at 14 when i was accepted to the "fame" school; the high school of music and art in nyc. at age 19 i thought it was ridiculous that i was smoking the marlboro lights. my devil of choice at the time. so while in college, very determined to succeed, practice hard and learn all i could, i just stopped one day without a hitch.
that lasted till my dad past away one week before i was to graduate at age 23 with an honors degree. so there i was emotionally distraught and smoking again. i am now 44 and still smoking and how ridiculous it seems that i have yet to put it down. this year i tried twice to quit. both times cold turkey. first time lasted a week. second time lasted a month.i have tried patches and pills in the past and i am fully convinced that if i really want to stop, i can and will. yes the pills and/or patch may make it a bit easier at first but then there is the issue of dependancy or displacing the focus. i would rather focus on chips or food than nicotine and drugs.
so up until this coming friday, 8 22 08, i will allow 5 cigarettes a day as a warm up and to decrease the steady flow of nicotine in my system as well as practicing not having a cigarette every time i want one.i will then proceed to quit on friday. so wish me luck, i know i'll need it and as much support as i can get would be greatly appreciated.

love all the non smokers and it is that power that i will draw upon along with allen carr of course. my oh so logical guru.

doublemint gum............ my savior

update.......... aug 25th, day 5 quitter and going strong

Greetings friend. I'm doing some house cleaning here and am deleting those who seem to have disappeared. If I don't get a response back from you within a couple of days I will assume you are gone and will delete you from my friend list. Don't mean nothin' personal by it. I'm just trying to be more attentive to those who ARE still around. I hope wherever you are that you are well and smoke free.

No Stars video......I never noticed that 'mic' problem.
Perhaps it was due to the soundman being 'legally deaf', and treating each band like a 'chore', whether we were a 'national' act or not.
Will have to check that out......our drummer would love that info......GOOD EYES!

Peace,
Mitch

Hi,
I knew it was Glenn. Why did I say "Greg"? Hmmmm. I don't know any Gregs, and only one Glenn.
Middle age mind-fart, I guess.
Being a "New Englander", I think you'd really dig my Dad's old tune from the 60's titled "Something About CT".
Soooo kitchy and schmaltzy, lyrically (and musically for that matter).
Drop me a line at abodemc@mags.net and I'll send you an mp3 that I digitized from an old acetate. He brought in a 'ringer' singer/crooner. So comical nowadays, but so smart arrangement-wise.
It's actually the 'vice-president' of CT State Songs. He entered it in a contest because we had no state song. Yankee Doodle won.
But if Yankee Doodle dies, His song takes its place.
I petitioned Governor Rell a few years ago, and despite the fact that she's a Republican, she sent a very nice letter of appreciation.
One of these days I'm going to frame it alongside the acetate and the digitized CD/-- and artwork done by a caricaturist on what looks like a brown paper bag. When I die, I'll pass it on to my half-brother, who was only three when my dad died. (The old man popped out a kid at age 78 with his 38-year old, third wife...whoo-hoooo!), and I think the little guy deserves it over my other 2 half-sisters and my other half-brother from his 2nd marriage.
They 'glommed' all of his memorabilia from his show-biz days when he passed (Including some killer shots of him at the piano surrounded by scantily-clad show girls----I'd like a copy, please. And many boxes of hand-written sheet music). Check ASCAP for Charlie Murray, and also Larry Markes. They did a lot together.
Larry and his wife wrote the theme for the Scooby-Doo cartoon show...how far removed from the 50's, gigging at the Blue Angel in NYC?
Anyway, congrats on your 103 days!
I'll be starting down that road on the 17th....
Wish me luck, bro!
All the Best, (The John Prine Version)

P.S. Now that I think of it, I DO know a Glenn.....He was the drummer for Lost Generation. Small world, small brain...

Greg,
Please keep the quit!
And remind you to tell you about my band-years with Sal Paradise, a very close friend of Danny Lanois and Neil Schlossberg.
It's an interesting story to say the least.....

Hi Greg,
I think that most musicians have a sense of humor, otherwise they wouldn't be musicians. Glad to hear that you're involved steadily in so many projects.
Man, do I need a project!!!
I'm stuck here in 'Middle Connecticut', and I'd love to get out, reform a band and do some gigs. But this is CT! The best you get is some Buffalo Wing joint or the 2 clubs that still exist. And a lot of Lynyrd Skynyd tribute band burnouts. There are some like-minded individuals, but they're half into their kids' soccer practice.
I should have taken my psycho groupie's advice and moved into the Village in 1979 with her and her 'girlfriend'. I think that 'life' would be so different now.
Not that I'm complaining.....I have a wonderful artsy-minded wife of 16 years, but I miss performing. However, I'm a 'band' leader, and not a solo artist. Putting a band together requires so much PATIENCE and diligence. And me, being 53 doesn't attract the folks willing to travel.....
I guess I have to stick to the DIY (and using the occasional ringer), and put my stuff out there on youtube, etc.
Man, it's frustrating. Willie Nelson is about 90 years old and he's doing it---but he has a full crew, and lotsa' reefer to rely on.
How do you do it? Do you have any kids? Are you strictly a studio musician?
My wife and I are trying IVF to have a kid. I don't know whether to shit or wind my watch!
Anyway, again, check YouTube for ronsvet48. And if you need a fill-in guitarist for a session, I'd love to get involved.
Peace,
Mitch

grg,
Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving, from me and my wife.
I'm sorry to hear about your Dad's passing. That's always tough.
Mine passed away last year, but left a legacy of children, music, and business. I have three 'half-siblings' from his second marriage, and a fourth from his third......he's 10-years-old now, and I've never met him. Don't get me wrong, these are Yale and Columbia Alumni. My eldest "half-brother" went to Wake Forest on a Football scholarship......he dropped out to pursue a career in Theatre..(Followed in his mom's footsteps---although my Dad had a lucrative career in show business-----Playing with Benny Goodman, Ethel Merman, Ed Sullivan, Bob Hope, et. al.
He played with a lot of the jazz 'giants' in NYC at th Blue Angel and other clubs. That's where his head was at, and not the rigors of becoming a concert pianist.
I wish I could send you 4 of his tunes. Scmaltzy, but apropos for the times. If you send me an email, I'll see that you get them.
abodemc@mags.net.
I'll also send you a few of my recent tunes, done here in my studio. Ballads.....I think you'll dig 'em.

Anyway, what are you using for recording? Do you have anything up on YouTube? What kind of kit are you playing?
I have unlimited free minutes on weekends. Why not give me a call? (Drop me an email, and I'll give you my #....I'd love to chat music with you!)

G,
Here's Mitch Murray's autobio for "YOUR EYES ONLY". It's not published, and was a "personal gift' between me and him.
I hope you respect our privacy and keep it between you and me.
I think you''ll enjoy the history of the 'scene'.
Again, please keep this between you and me...
I saw "Mitch Murray's" name in a songbook when I was learning guitar. I said to myself, "I WANNA SEE MY NAME IN ONE OF THOSE BOOKS SOMEDAY"...Fast forward to the internet, and we "found" each other....Long friendship, lotsa' emails, and eventually a a meeting at the Hilton in NYC.
The Autobio is sacred ground, and I'm sharing it because you're a musician and you recall those "hits" much as I did.
Perhaps they were subconscious influences?

Anyway, here's the AutoBio: Again, I ask that you keep it private!

Hi G.,
Any relation to Steven I. Grossman from Long Island / NYC?
We're old friends but have lost touch.
All the Best to You,
M.

Where and how do you folks get the cool countdown widgets?
I've been to www.pyzam, and couldn't find one! Arrgh!
I'd like to have a daily reminder like that, since I'm on this site almost every day....
