My experiences with the thorn in my paw

I am very happy there are support websites like this one! Having this opportunity to write and share with others my trials and tribulations with cigarettes is a great motivator.

I started smoking at the age of 13 with a friend of mine. I'll never forget trying to act like I knew what I was doing. And of course, I had to show my older sister that I smoked. She noted that I did not inhale, so of course, I had to inhale, and started choking and coughing. Imagine that!

At that time, the Surgeon General had not posted his findings about cigarettes, and the warnings were not on the packages. They cost about .25 a pack.

We had recently moved, and I so desperately wanted to fit in with the kids in the neighborhood, and be cool, and have 'adult' knowledge, which included cigarettes, that I would have tried almost anything. I also remember 'trying' to quit as a teenager, and finding it difficult, not realizing the hold they already had on me. Slowly they attached themselves to every aspect of my life - I let them in. I let them become the first thing I did in the morning, and the last thing I did at night.

I am happy that now, after all this time, I am breaking that binding.

125 days - and never looking back!

Can't believe I have actually quit. I never thought I could summon up the willpower. But, I learned so much from this experience. I have learned that we can do anything if we set our minds to it. I have also learned that some people pretend to be supportive, but are not. I will never ever smoke another - even though at times I think I want to. I can imagine smoking, and then, I feel disgust and fear. I realize it would take me another 20+ years to quit again, and I am not willing to pay that pri… Continue

April Fool on you - Tobacco!!!!!

:) They raised the price again today! Surprise. I no longer smoke, or purchase cigarettes. The joke is on tobacco. YEA!! It has been 92 days! I am so happy. I still want one every once in awhile, but the monkey stays away a lot longer these days. I am trying to go to the gym and workout as much as I can. It is very tiring when you get older. But, overall, I have more energy and feel much better without the nasty cigarettes and the cloud over my head. Have a great night all!!!

I love nice long drives now....

I went to visit some relatives, and drove for about 4 hours yesterday to visit, and 4 hours today, back from visit. I am so glad I do not smoke any longer. It is 75 days for me now, and driving is a pleasure. I do not worry about dropping a hot ash somewhere in the car, or the cigarette butt coming back into the car via the back window. The smell in the car....the cost. My trip is paid for, because I did not smoke cigarettes. I had much fun!!! Being in a different setting with a non smokers, a… Continue

Rough Times at Non Smoking

This Tuesday it will be two months. I was sailing along pretty well there for a while, but these last few days have been really tough. I am menopausal, so that adds to the fun. The cravings have been really extremely annoying. I can still taste the damn cigarettes, and I want one. Even tho' I feel better and do not wheeze. Even tho' I have gone so long without one...even tho' I have saved over $300. I still want one. It is depresssing....I wish I never would have started smoking. Too bad there i… Continue

Coming up on FIVE WEEKS!!!! COUNT 'EM FIVE WEEKS!!!

Some days are tougher than others...but for the most part, I am really thrilled that I gave them up, and will not have to fit in that oxygen tank as part of my senior wardrobe. I have been cranky lately, and sometimes not too nice, but overall, I have been doing well. I am so proud of myself for sticking with it, even tho' I have been stressed out at least a couple of times, and have really wanted one. I will not go back...I WILL ONLY MOVE FORWARD!!! This website is a blessing! Thank you all f… Continue
