Counting Down to Quittin' Time

Profile Information

About Me:
Since my quit date on January 23 I'm working hard to use strategies and overcome cigarettes. I'm excited and confident that this time I can be successful.

My Reasons for Quitting
1. Because someday I want to have kids
2. Because cigarettes are so expensive!
3. Because I hate the way it makes my hair and clothes smell.
4. Because I want to be able to exercise without feeling out of breath.
5. Because my health is important to me.

Friday makes 3 weeks!

The time has gone by quickly! I started out using the step 2 nicoderm patches in early January. I've forgotten to put it on once or twice and haven't had any problems. Does anyone have any recommendations on when to switch to the lowest dose of the patch? Thanks for all your advice and support!

First Week

I've made it through my first full week with no cigarettes. Lessons learned from this week: (1) Feeling stressed? Find something to take your mind off what is bothering you. Call a friend, read something funny, think happy thoughts! (2) Drink water rather than Diet Cokes and coffee because those two are still active triggers for you. (3) Patches stick best on your upper back, but they leave funny squarish rings behind when you take them off. Loofah! I'm feeling accomplished, but also tired.… Continue

Back On!

After my break up two weeks ago, I went right back to smoking. Granted, it wasn't with my normal fervor but I was still "sneaking" three or four a day. After the inauguration last week, I got myself back on track. Now I'm four days smoke free and very happy about it. I had to remind myself not to let someone else interfere with my goals for myself. I'd been doing that a lot in my relationship, and now that it's over, I have no excuse to give up what I want and need.

Slipped Off

After a fight this morning with my boyfriend, all I could think about was smoking. I finally broke down and had half a cigarette. It tasted terrible and I ended up putting it out after a few drags. I'm not upset that I had a slip up. It is just evidence that I need to work on strategies for stressful situations. I know that despite having that cigarette, I'm still committed to quitting smoking. I've got my patch on and am ready to face the day without smoking. Thank you to everyone who gave me s… Continue

You've got some great reasons to quit, especially having kids. I continued to smoke after my son was born. When we become parents the guilt can really hit hard. "Do as I say, not as I do." Kind of tough to tell your child that smoking is bad and kills while smoking. One of my reasons for staying quit is that I'm no longer teaching my son how to be a drug addict. We all go "cold turkey" at some point, because quitting is quitting, it's just a matter of when we stop the nicotine and 3,999 other chemicals from ever going into our body again. I started my final quit in 2006. It has been the best decision I ever made.

Hello Lauren! I would like to extend a warm welcome to you. This is a great way to start out 2009! I'm 53 and I started smoking when I was 15. I quit on July 17, 2004. I was so scared when I quit, but it was the best thing I ever did for myself. There's lots of great people to help you on this site. Stick with the winners; the ones who are positive and enthusiatic about helping you. You are welcome to check out the group "Yes You Can."
