JEFF's SMOKE FREE LOUNGE

Profile Information

About Me:
My name's Jeff and I'm an ex-smoker. I started my nicotine habit when I was 15, chewing tobacco so I could be more like my older brother. When I was 19, I started smoking because it was too hard to keep up with chewing tobacco while waiting tables and working in the restaurant. So I did the smart thing: I started smoking. Yep, I traded one bad habit for a worse one. Unfortunately, I started tobacco when I was too young to know what I was signing myself up for. Well, I'm 34 now and quite a bit smarter. I now regard the addiction as foolish but nothing to fool around with. This is a dangerous drug, and quite possibly, the dumbest thing ever devised by man. Paying $6.00 a pack to light a fire three inches from your face, inhale poison, smell like an ashtray and pretend that it has "magical" powers to cure boredom, treat stress, make you look cool? Really??
Well I for one got tired of being a slave to such a stupid thing. That's what brought me here. I got tired of coughing up phlegm every morning; tired of constantly worrying about when and how I'd get my next fix; tired of walking down two flights of stairs, out the door and around the side of the building to stand in the snow, shivering just so I could feed the habit. I got tired of people giving me dirty looks as I stood near an entrance smoking; I got tired of having to leave the dinner table just to go smoke. I got tired of being a slave.

That's why I'm here. If you can relate and you'd like support with your quit, I'm here to help. This drug and this habit suck, plain and simple.

Jeff - well articulated. Yeah, smoking is cool at first, but in reality we were slaves. For anyone of us who had scheduled our day around smoking and even booked flights with longer layovers in order to smoke, we were slaves to those sticks. Keep up the quit and great comments!

Hi Jeff,
Thanks for the welcome and the support. Today will be my third day and so far so good. I truly feel I can do this. Every other time I "quit" I felt so stressed about the idea of not smoking again. This time has been different. Maybe its all you guys or maybe its just that I know now is my time. Either way I'll take it. Im not saying I haven't freaked out some lol, but my attitude is certainly more positive and aggressive. Thanks again, and sorry it took so long to get back to you :)

Tom,
I know it feels like Hell, but think again. Smoking is Hell. That's why it's on fire and it's smoking ;-)You've just convinced yourself for 40 years that the opposite was true. You're not walking into Hell, you're walking out. Every time you're tempted to think that it's Hell, think again. Good luck. You can do it.
