Quit Smoking on Halloween

Sometimes it helps to choose a special day to stop smoking. Some people pick holidays, others pick birthdays. Some people even pick Halloween. Why Halloween? Well, over the past ten years Halloween has taken on a life of its own with sales of Halloween items skyrocketing. It has become a time for some people to express their individuality in how they decorate, the kind of candies they give away to trick-or-treaters, and most importantly in the costume they choose. Halloween can be a great oppor… Continue

How does Type 2 Diabetes and smoking make you at higher risk for heart disease?

There are increased risks associated with smoking in individuals with Type 2 diabetes mellitus. Smoking and diabetes can cause a substantial increase in hardening of the arteries or atherosclerosis. If you have Type 2 Diabetes, you are aware that you have increased risk for all-cause mortality. By smoking you increase that risk even higher and have greater potential for developing heart disease. Evidence suggests that the risk increases with the amount of tobacco used by the diabetic. That means… Continue

Managing Stress for a Healthier Life

Remember, by stopping smoking you will improve your health and self-image. An increase in self-esteem can offer more energy to daily challenges. Once approach is to recognize if a stress or is something you can or cannot control. One idea is to apply the "4 A's". Perhaps a level of acceptance can be achieved if… Continue

Stress and Smoking

Many people don't know if they can handle stress if they quit smoking. Some feel quitting will increase stress. Both are normal feelings. Actually stress is a normal part of life, regardless if a person is smoking or not. If you have found smoking accompanies to reaction to stress, this can be very difficult to overcome. However, many people already handle stress at times without smoking and lived through it. Stress comes in different flavors: short term (unexpected situations, such as waking u… Continue

Well, I am new to this program. I have yet to set a quit date, though in the past 2 weeks I've managed to cut my smoking rate in half-- this is one of my methods, as in the past it has helped me 'quit' more easily. The use of a nicotine patch was at one point very helpful, but at this point it helps only temporarily.... and, I have to tell you: last winter I went for hypnotherapy, and "Wham!", like a magic wand I immediately felt no cravings, no need or desire to smoke. However, in less than a week, the therapy evaporated... my idiotic brain took over, telling me "you don't really want to, or need to, quit." SO, I wonder, from your experience, is there something I can say to myself at this point (after 30 years or so of smoking), to really convince myself to 'do the right thing'???

Question for you - have you ever smoked? Do you know first hand what this addiction is all about? Or are you just basing all your responses on clinical observation and statistics?

Hello Dr Hurt,
Some of the women I chat with on the site have been struggling with depression while quitting smoking. I would very much appreciate if you could blog on this subject. I lost a couple previous quit attempts for this reason - I couldn't take the tears and had no interest in taking anti-depressants if it could be avoided! For myself - I'm doing better on this quit - a couple bad days but basically seem to be ok. At the same time I truly empathize with these women - its a real issue!!
Many thanks,
Sandra

Hello Dr. Hurt.

I'm researching the question "Does second hand smoke contain enough nicotine to reestablish the dependency?" Based on the information I've been able to find on the internet, it appears the answer is that it does not. Can you you confirm or refute this or point me to somewhere that contains a definitive answer?

Thank you.
