HELP ADDING A GADGET TO MY PAGE PLEASE!!!!!!!!!

Hi All, New to this site and while checking it out I have noticed alot of great things on people's pages and well it says on your page if you would like to add text or pictures, widgets click here so I clicked. now I'm not a total moron I read the instructions I did what it said pick a widget copy paste in text box well my first question is why when I paste does it just show the code thingy and not the widget I wanted First I thought well maybe this one doesn't work so i tried another and the same thing happend!!! I've been trying this for 2 days and to tell ya the truth I'm ready to pull my hair out!! someone please help......
