BecomeAnEX.org Online Support Network

Just stumbled on this via internet search and I am hoping it was more Divine intervention than chance. I am preparing to quit smoking after 37 years and I am scared of what lies ahead. I have tried previously to quit and I usually find myself in tears and unable to cope with minor daily issues. I am also about 40 pounds heavier than the last quit attempt and not sure if I will be able to walk if I gain more weight. However with all of that, I am motivated! I watched my Mother die of lung cancer 2 months ago. She was 80 and an ex smoker. I hear the rattle in my own chest and the crazy smoker's cough and I see my destiny if things don't change soon. So I am hoping there is a whole lot of support out there because I know I am going to need it.

I was terrified when I quit. I wouldn't worry if I were you about weight gain when you quit. If you do gain a few pounds, you can always take them off after you're secure in your quit. As you know from your mother's passing, if you don't quit, you will die long before your time. Imagine the rattle being gone and you stop coughing. Imagine having the freedom to go wherever you want and not letting smoking control every aspect of your life. Imagine not stinking like a smoker anymore. The beginning of your quit will probably be tough, but it is so worth it. You're going to feel better than you have in years. I will be here to cheer you on and read about your success.

I know the thought of quitting is scary. I have smoked for 23 years and it is going to be very hard for me. We just need to take one step, one day at a time. I found this website today and though I have tried to quit before, I have never prepared to quit like they show you to do here. I am hoping that is the key. I am sorry to hear about your mother. Use her memory for inspiration and just take it slow. If you would like to be my friend please accept my friend invite. I am learning the more people you know that are going through the same thing, the better you feel. I am the only smoker in my family and at times feel very alone which I am sure is why it has taken me so long to really commit to quitting. You are not alone! We can all do it together.
